Etsy and Senior Showcase

Mar 19, 2016 by

This week I had my Senior Showcase. All BYU-Idaho students are required to create a project and show it off at Senior Showcase before graduation. I am happy to say, the project was a success and that I felt confident presenting my senior project. My family and I have made these crazy doodle designs for as long as I can remember. My mom and I have talked about making our designs into fabric design, duvet covers, t-shirts and bags for a few years now. So far I have only been able to figure out T-Shirts and bags. I collected designs from my mom and sisters, fixed those designs up in Illustrator and Photoshop and made them look ready for print. I researched printing costs, but to print in a shop is really expensive...

The 5 Doodle Girls

Mar 4, 2016 by

This is my last semester at BYU-Idaho! Yay! I almost made it. At BYU-Idaho, the communication students are required to create a senior project before graduation. Traditionally this is done your last semester. I thought about what I was going to do for the past few semesters. My whole family has a habit of doodling these crazy (usually abstract) doodles. My mom and I have always wanted to make fabric or duvet covers with our doodles on them. We have been working on the process of DIY screen printing and we are not entirely sure what products we will be able to print on. We are starting with shirts and a canvas bag. I have about 16 designs that will be sold on an Etsy shop. I will open the shop as soon as...

The Cure of Aging- Editorial Image...

Dec 17, 2015 by

For my final assignment in my Vector Graphics class we were given an article and asked to create an editorial image for the article. The article is about a Harvard Professor who believes he can stop the aging process. You can read the article here; https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/achenblog/wp/2015/12/02/professor-george-church-says-he-can-reverse-the-aging-process/   Ideation:  After reading the article a few times, I made a list of things that came to mind. After I found a few words I liked I linked a few of the words that would go well together.  I circled the words I liked and drew lines to the words I thought they would go well with. Sketches: After I found the words that I really liked, I started sketching out ideas. I did not want my design to appear so obvious, but rather I wanted it to...

Reindeer for Every Season

Dec 3, 2015 by

For my Vector Graphics class we have been working on designing T-Shirts. Finding a theme for a project like this is actually really difficult for me because the only time I will wear printed T-shirts is to bed. So I needed to find something that I actually really liked and would wear around the house or find something to give to someone for Christmas (I’m sure one of my sisters will steal it from me anyway). I have a strange obsession for reindeer, I own several reindeer pajama pants, a reindeer dress, reindeer shirts and sweatshirts. All except the dress I only wear around the house. I also have a reindeer pillow pet.  I figured I could add to the collection. I knew I didn’t want just a plain reindeer, but I was still unsure...

Project: Scooter

Nov 19, 2015 by

For the past two weeks in my vector graphics class we have been working on designing a two-wheeled vehicle. I chose to design a scooter. While looking for scooters to model my vector scooter after I discovered that most scooters actually do not look anything a like. I was going for more of a razor scooter look, however different parts of my scooter were modeled after different types of scooters.     Sketches: After researching which two-wheeled vehicle I wanted to create, and narrowing down bits and pieces of the scooter I began to sketch. I thought about going with a scooter with bike looking wheels, but since my sketches of that vehicle turned out like  Dr. Seuss drawings I thought I should probably go with more of a typical Razor Scooter look.  ...

Your Cup of Tea

Oct 22, 2015 by

This week, in my Vector Graphics class I was assigned to design a website in Illustrator using Vector Graphics from my last assignment.   Sketches: I sketched out ideas of how my website should look using a wireframe layout.       Then I choose two of my sketches and made them into Illustrator wireframes. Designing in Illustrator: After I completed my sketches, I choose a theme for my website. I decided I wanted to go with a tea cup shop. I decided none of my sketches really worked with the theme I chose so I went with an infinite scrolling design. I used the outline of my cups as navigation icons. I used the same fonts as my last tea cup project to create a sense of harmony. My designs were relatively simplistic...

Teacups

Oct 8, 2015 by

The Project:  For my Vector Graphics class this semester we were required to design icons. I choose to design teacups since I have a small collection of them. My designs were inspired by seven of my own teacups and teacups I found on Pinterest. I wanted each cup to be different from each other. Some seem much different than others.   The Process-Sketching:  I began the process by sketching the seven teacups I had on display at a very small scale as you can see:   After I got an idea as to what I was doing I sketched twelve final teacups: I then took six of my designs to the next level with Illustrator: After I worked out some kinks with the first six, I added six more. I struggled to get the...

Senior Showcase Advertisements

Apr 14, 2014 by

Another Semester down! One more step closer to my dreams! I’ve kept very busy this last semester, I was working and taking 15 or 16 credits. I kept up to date on all of my school work, made time for friends and even had the opportunity to make a little money free-lancing. Zachary Lee, a student who was in the Events Management class at BYU-Idaho hired me to be the designer for the Senior Showcase at BYU-Idaho. I helped him design a poster and a flyer to promote the event. Kris Bennett, another BYU-Idaho student in the BYU-Idaho Events Management class informed me that these advertisements promoted an event that brought in over 800 people and increased the attendance by over 50% from last years Senior Showcase. Here is the Poster that was displayed...

Photo Adventures- Photo-book Final...

Apr 3, 2014 by

For my Final project in Digital Imaging we were assigned to create a photo-book with a collection of our work throughout the semester. I used mypublisher.com to send my book off to look like a real book. I designed the format of the book in In-Design using some Illustrator. I used a beveled edged frame around each of my pictures and a decorative font as the headings for my description pages. I took my best work from all my photos I have posted this semester. I gave information about how I took the pictures, where and the significance of each picture. I designed the cover in Illustrator and In-Design featuring a camera I designed in Illustrator. I liked the black and white, I felt that it complimented my work in a very classy way...

Tips on Photographing Children

Mar 27, 2014 by

One of my last assignments for my Digital imaging class was to make a tutorial. This was my very first attempt at making a video that I didn’t just press the record button on and call it good, I know nothing about video editing so it was a little frustrating for me. I chose to do my tutorial video on photographing children because I have experience with it and expect that I will have more experience with child photography in the future, I did some research but mostly I came up with the idea on my own. This is applicable to anyone who will ever take a picture of a child, which lets face it most of us will. Click here for the PDF document: TutorialPDF   Photos included in the video and the PDF...

Keep it Herbal

Mar 6, 2014 by

For my Art and Propaganda class I was supposed to make a piece of propaganda. I had no idea what to do then, while working on my photo book project, I saw this picture I took and thought of the phrase “Keep it Herbal” my friend and I are seriously considering making this a real business (This is not a real advertisement, please do not count on the library having this tea). We love tea and want to give it a positive image, not all teas are against the Word of Wisdom so we shouldn’t be shunned when we tell people that we love tea.  Students, how many of you would be interested if we started selling tea to university students? -Marisa Faye Reeves  ...

Fall 2013 Portfolio-Visual Media...

Dec 14, 2013 by

This was my final project for my visual media class, we were to create a portfolio from all the projects we created this semester. Portfolio by RisaFaye3 Project Corrections/Time spent: I spent several hours correcting the brochure project I lost count of how many. It was over 4 for sure. The layout of the In-Design document itself probably took about 3 hours. Top 3 things learned in this course: 1) Some HTML 2) How to design in Word 3) Just different ways of doing things, how to be more effective and time savvy in certain programs. I have worked with the majority of these programs for a long time but I am always learning new ways to perform design work. Future application of Visual Media: I will continue to use these programs forever to enhance myself...

A Brochure about ME!

Dec 7, 2013 by

For my Visual media class I was to design a brochure this is What I came up with: The Front View of My Brochure: This Brochure has 5 different sections, each section has a page that overlaps the previous page just enough so you can see the titles of each section. Here is what a section would look like:   Here is are screenshots of what each category will look like:   This Brochure was created to showcase me 🙂 The Process of this was long, It was difficult for me to figure out how this would print out. I designed this primarily in Indesign, however I did some photo editing in Photoshop- of course. I gathered information, pictures and then designed the layout. I then placed my images and figured out where I...

Designer’s Voyage HTML Web Page...

Nov 20, 2013 by

This was my very first experience with HTML. In my visual media class we have been learning the basics of HTML, it’s quite the learning curve for me. Although I’ve grown up on design, this was not something I was ever taught. We were to create a logo, the logo I designed was the one I use as my website logo. After designing a logo we were assigned to form a web-page using HTML. After we received a general understanding of HTML we applied the concept of CSS to our web-page design. The above image is what I was able to form using HTML and CSS. Top 3 things learned: 1) Basic HTML terminology and layout. 2) W3 Schools helped me a lot. I was able to figure out how to get rid of...

Mariel’s Authentic Mermaid Tales...

Nov 9, 2013 by

This project was inspired by two things: 1. My sister Mariel, who often we tell people who struggle with her name that It’s just like Ariel from the Little Mermaid with an M. 2. Growing up, my sister and I would pretend to be mermaids whenever we went swimming, as I’m sure most girls do at a young age (and maybe even now) I saw this maybe 3 years ago on Pinterest and I wanted my very own Mermaid tale: http://www.pinterest.com/pin/188658671861088736/ I found out they were kinda pricey, and I looked up a tutorial on how to make them. One day I’d like to try it, but for now I’ll just create a fake company for them 😀 I began by designing a logo in Illustrator. I then took that logo into my Business...

Aphrodite Nail Salon-Logo Design...

Nov 2, 2013 by

These Logos were designed for two of my very best childhood friends, they both have their Nail Tech licenses and have shown interest in starting their own business. When I was assigned this project in my Visual Media Class, I instantly thought of the two of them! I volunteered to design a logo for them, free of cost because they have always been such good friends to me, and also I have gotten my nails done by one of my friends a few times for a considerably lower price then if I were to go to a local salon, and she did a good job After I received the idea of designing for my friends, I asked their permission and then I searched for inspiration. Pinterest and Google Images were my main sources...

Super Montage

Oct 26, 2013 by

This project was designed for my visual Media class. I was to create a montage from 2 or more images (I have 3) and gradually blend them together to make a point. I sought inspiration from pictures on my own computer. I was able to find a picture of me when I was Super-girl for my little sisters birthday party and a picture another one of my little sisters took of their video game (The Monster Attack Newspaper). I got the idea to use Black Friday as my subject and Super girl as my theme encouraging shoppers to stay “Super” safe during their Black Friday adventures. Techniques I used included, Using Mask Layers, blending techniques, layer and text drop shadows and other effects. Top 3 things learned: 1) I have not used Masks in...

Into the Garden

Oct 17, 2013 by

This project was designed to focus on basic photography and photoshop skill sets. We were assigned to take pictures with good composition, appropriate lighting, a sharp focus and strong focal point. The photoshop portion of this assignment was to desaturate a portion of our photograph and add a filter. My photograph was shot in garden on campus this last weekend when my sisters came to visit me for the weekend. The little girl in the picture is my baby sister. After my photo shoot with my sisters I reformatted my image in photoshop, cropped it to the appropriate size and resolution. After my image was appropriately sized, I reopened the image, created a base layer and then a duplicate layer. On my duplicate layer I preformed a de-saturation technique to the wood in the...

Cheese Louise Event Flyer

Oct 11, 2013 by

Description: I designed this flyer for my Visual Media class, This was a challenge for me because I have always had Adobe programs around me since my mother is a graphic designer and I pursued a life of design as well.  I was NOT allowed to use Adobe programs on this specific project, I quite honestly did not know how to use word to design anything, I never needed too. There were times where I really wanted to open up illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop but I was able to compose this project entirely from MicroSoft Word as I was assigned to do, even the logo which was a struggle but a push for me. The assignment was to create a flyer for a beneficiary and a benefactor using a high quality image that we...

Graduate Leadership Flyer

Oct 3, 2013 by

Description: This is a flyer that I designed for my Visual Media class this week. I was given the information, picture, logo and was assigned to design the layout. The layout had to fit in with the P-A-R-C-F principles (Proximity Alignment Repetition Contrast and Flow) to create a visually appealing image to the target audience. Process: I started by sketching 4 possible layouts with a fine pen. I then opened up In-Design and began to play with variations of my sketches. I started to play with alignment and repetition. Once I was pretty much set on my layout I began to search for fonts that would be appropriate and visually appealing. I had trouble finding a title font that I felt pleased with for this particular design so I searched on dafont.com for a...

Two years ago today I created “Designer’s Voyage” The Voyage truly has been a blessing in my life. The goal for my voyage has not changed from the beginning, however like any voyage there were some unexpected turns and obstacles that crossed my path. I am still an aspiring designer but I am also working towards being an event coordinator for large design events. Through all the mysterious winds in life posting my work, my accomplishments and my life here has been a wonderful confidence booster! Seeing my work come together and being published where others actually admire and read my work is truly exciting for me! Seriously, I get so excited every time I beat my record of viewers here on The Voyage or increase my number of followers. I love hearing from...

Designing for The Business Expo...

Feb 11, 2013 by

I am currently taking an Events Management class, I think this is what I want to do with my future so I figured I better take the class because I don’t like wasting any time when it comes to my future. I feel the need to test the waters now. I am throughly enjoying the class. My teacher assigned a group of us to coordinate with the Chamber of Commerce to plan and produce the Business Expo this coming April. (Finals week/ move out week it’s going to be a CRAZY week!) With my design experience I was entitled to the position of the group “Designer”. I’m excited to start more design projects soon. The Chamber of Commerce has been producing the Business Expo for quite a few years now and yet they do...

A light in the Dark Fabric Design...

Dec 6, 2011 by

A Light in the Dark Fabric Design: I was assigned to either design an area rug or a fabric. I chose fabric. My sources of inspiration came from: The floating lanterns because I remembered lighting them off at my dear friend Kylie Mae’s Birthday party. (You may recognize these as the lanterns from the popular Disney movie Tangled). Another source of inspiration came from the rhythmic pattern of a simple city scape. As lanterns ascend to the sky they appear to be smaller and smaller as they float away. I created a pattern where the motif that appears to be a lantern starts at a very large size and decreases in size as it works its way up the fabric. Eventually they get big again and the process starts over again. The color palettes...
